Whatever happened to Satanic cinema? Gotta love movies like this one: “The First Power” starring Lou Diamond Phillips. This was one of my fave movies as a kid, because I’m weird like that. Maybe it’s a bit cheesy for modern cinema but it didn’t seem cheesy at all in this movie. But Arnold Schwarzenegger made a Satanic action movie called “End Of Days”. That movie wasn’t cheesy. The thing is the devil coming back to Earth is something that has to be done right in order to work. In this movie we have a cop going up against one of those classic 80′s badguys that showed up in other movies. They should bring back this trend. Come back Satan! Lou Diamond Phillips was also good in “The Big Hit” as a hitman. Check it out.

THE HYENAS COME OUT AT NIGHT

You like werewolves? Well then get ready for something new. “Hyenas” is on the scene to take us by storm. While “Underworld” has their morphing effects in full swing you can check out how cool the morphing effects in this movie look. The EFX are well done here and I like the hyena angle. Werewolves would be too easy. This time we got something a bit more wild. Plenty of gore, nudity, and awesome morphing action. It’s not a big budget movie but it oozes a coolness that you don’t always get from those big budget counterparts. The critics can be harsh but I never listen to them. Make up your own mind. You don’t get to awesomeness by having a big budget, but it helps. This is underground cool. Hyenas are kinda creepy.

YOU ARE INFESTED

This movie “Bug” is what I call minimalist horror. You can quote me on that. It’s a lot like “Saw” in the fact that it’s making the most of a lower budget without really losing the feel of a big budget movie. In Saw they had only one room. In this we have really only one room. But it’s what you do with that room. Ashley Judd did a great job in this movie of being the paranoid freak after being infected with “paranoia” by the man she picks up for a night of fun. This paranoia is actually a government created virus that makes you think you’re infected with a bug infestation that you must cut out of you! Yikes! It delivers on the freaky scale and cyberpunks love a good dose of paranoia in any form. This is one bug you don’t want.

OH THAT LILY!

If you watched “The Munsters” then you will have heard of this one. Lily Munster was a sexy mother but I never knew just how sexy she really was ’til now. I mean c’mon, look at that bod! This girl got it goin’ on. Yvonne De Carlo was her name. I know there are nudes of her out there but not many. She never did any really well known magazines or a whole photo shoot. The story is she was a really seasoned, well experienced actress but at the time times were hard and in order for her to get a role she had to go with The Munsters. That’s what you call fate. She was popular and in demand but the difficulty of the times turned her into a goth icon. Ironically, that show got huge. That’s what you call luck of the draw. Good for her.

DUNCAN IS THE MAN

Gotta love those oldies sometimes. Like this one here: “Order Of The Black Eagle”. This movie was about Duncan Jax, secret agent, protector of freedom, and all around badass. He’s so badass that he went up against the Nazis and a cryogenically frozen Hitler! You heard me correctly, Hitler is not dead, at least not in this movie. He does meet a grisly demise though. So inventive those Nazis. Back when action heroes weren’t afraid to kill some people. Gotta love that. Now days we have so many PG-13 movies where they try to appeal to a wider audience. It can ruin the effect of a movie to make it too censored though. This movie was lower budget but it’s so awesome. The sequel was equally as awesome, “Unmasking The Idol”, where Duncan Jax is a ninja! Can’t get cooler than this. He even chooses 007 when playing roulette. You are the man Duncan Jax! Wish we had movies like this now with bigger budgets. All badguys die. All goodguys live. Awesome!

DISSECTION FOR KIDS!

I like the sound of cutting into something that’s not human, or of this Earth for that matter. You ever wanted to do what they do in that show “Alien Autopsy”? Now you can! This game “Mad Scientst: Dissect-An-Alien” looks awesome! Well it’s more of a kit than a game since you’re just dissecting a poor alien creature. I don’t think it’s like “Operation” with gooey guts, although that would rock! Haha, yeah, make a really realistic version of Operation with an alien body where you have to do an autopsy! You know what would be even cooler than this? Only one thing: dissecting an alien and replanting the organs into a human! Make it a game like Operation but ten times as hard with gooey blood! I can only hope I suppose. *sigh*

ICHI’S FACE BEEN CUT UP

This movie “Ichi The Killer” was cool as hell. The man with blades in his shoes could take out a whole group of Yakuza in one bloody whirlwind. I believe it too, but you need extreme discipline and focus from martial arts conditioning. It’s hard to explain how over the top this movie was. Takashi Miike is a great director to make this too. The art of extreme movie making is one that can really turn out good but you have to know how to be over the top without being too over the top. This movie does just that and does it well. This could be called extreme neo noir but that would be my term. Most of the time noir means weird, but in an older detective style. The EFX were stellar. This movie is an icon to inspire future directors. Really gory, but it is well done.

HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL COOL ART

Did anyone know that “House On Haunted Hill” was a remake? I sure didn’t. That was one hell of a remake huh? Yeah I liked that movie, but now I have to see the original I think. The movie poster for this is so cool. You gotta admit that something about those old movie posters with actual art really did look cooler. I mean c’mon, a skeleton holding a hanged woman! Vincent Price holding a woman’s head! That’s cool. I wonder if the plot was the same because the remake was about an asylum full of ghosts where horrible atrocities were committed. That’s a scary plot really when you think about how real that could have been. They used to experiment on crazy people without consent back in the day. Mad scientists.

NIGHT TRAP NEEDED MORE SLEAZE!

I never played this game, “Night Trap” for the Sega Mega CD, but I have seen it in action. I won’t say it looks like the best, in fact it’s cheesy, but that’s part of the entertainment value. You can laugh at it and still play it. If anything the concept is so amazingly original that it warrants a go. The video quality is grainy but bearable enough to watch. Game video quality wasn’t the same as VHS back then and I kept asking myself why not. I do have a copy of another game with video in it though, “Sewer Shark” for the 3DO, which is also on Sega CD. That game is fun enough if you don’t judge it too much. The style of these games was very inventive and if they made live action video games now they’d be much better. There was controversy over Night Trap having scantily clad women. I say there should have been tons of nudity and sex and bloody mayhem! Then you’d really feel like a voyeur, LOL! Games will change someday. This game had vampires.

KUNG FU MASTER MYSTERY

Many of you have probably heard about what happened with David Carradine. He died in Thailand while filming a movie. None of his friends think it was a suicide. It appeared, or was made to appear, like a sex act gone wrong did him in. Hanging by his hands tied together it’s a gruesome image. They say he had done weird stuff before but I doubt it was an accident. The cops did rule out suicide later so it’s either an accident or murder. It sure looks like murder. I’m shocked that such a talent would turn up dead. Everyone knows him from “Kill Bill”. Asphyxiation is something I have only seen once, in a movie called “Rising Sun”. Is that experimentation what did him in? Maybe. I’ve heard stranger. It just doesn’t add up.

SHOP AT THE CHOPPING MALL!

When it comes to mall security you can never be too cautious. In “Chopping Mall” the mall has security robots. This is like way ahead of its time and I can appreciate that about these older movies. The funny thing is how the security bots are weaponized with lasers! What is the point of having weaponized machines in the mall? That’s some hardcore security. It sounds like a weird video game. This movie was over the top for the time with some good gore at parts and yes even some nude scenes. There just isn’t enough of both of those in modern movies. This is the type of plot you’d never expect. I tend to like those older EFX where they didn’t look like CGI because they didn’t use CGI back then. Cyberpunk horror I’d say.

SALLY’S CHAINSAW GETS USED

This Troma directed show “Chainsaw Sally” is really crazy, as are most things Troma, but they still manage to surprise me. I don’t think this is ripping off “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” but there is a lot of chainsaw in it. It’s demented in the first place to even have a show about a serial killer but after seeing “Dexter” you can really expect anything these days. It might be a low budget show but we never thought Troma was trying to make the next “Avatar”. It’s good for what it is and it opens the door for more demented ideas. This is a good sign for Troma as well having their own channel with a t.v. show on it. It seems everyone and their grandma has their own channel now. Why does Sally kill indiscriminately? Go Troma!

BRING ON THE RAGE

The new hit video game is “Rage” right now so why not expand your horizons and check out the book. Simply titled “Rage”, this book gets my interest. I don’t think it’s fair to say that video gamers wouldn’t be into books because that’s like saying they’re all stupid and that’s not true. The book cover is well done. I’d like to read it because the books usually tell you what happened more in depth and have cool descriptions. The Rage world is a post-apocalyptic one and I’ve always loved movies or books like that. This one has monster mutants too! Some might say it could lack substance but I’m not afraid of that. Post-apocalyptic stories aren’t usually that cerebral. Don’t think too much about it, just enjoy the ride. Get the rage!

DEATH OF AN EXPLOITATION MAG

‘Tis the death of a great resource here. “Psychotronic” magazine has died officially. It’s not something a lot of people may know about but it was basically covering exploitation cinema new and old. This is a good publication for anyone wanting to find old exploitation movies and still get reviews of new ones. The main focus was obscure cult films. I didn’t read it too much but I’m more into cult films now than I was before. It’s good to keep those sort of magazines going so we have resources to find hard to find material. The problem is also getting a copy of a hard to find movie. If you’re a movie collector then this magazine might have come in handy. Not many magazines deal with things like that now. People forget the past movies but we should want to compile them for others to find. You can learn a lot from older movies too ya know. Movie buffs will understand what I mean.

VEXILLE REBORN

You know what I like to do? I like ta take foreign editions of movie covers sometimes and put the American version DVD’s in ‘em. This movie “Vexille” was definitely some sweet cyberpunk chaos and it deserves a steelbook. This steelbook is only available in the U.K. however, which means I’ll have to order a PAL version DVD and then put in the NTSC version. You can still tell that it’s from the U.K. though because of that small red circle in the left corner that has the number 12 in it. The number refers to the age they think kids won’t get nightmares anymore probably, lol! I wish I could make my own steelbook but do you have any idea how hard it is to make those? You can’t unless you’re a distributor. I did this with “Area 51″ for the PS2 also. The steelbook was so cool I had to do it.
